The dominant performance of Anthony Davis, who led Los Angeles with 32 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, and four blocks, was the driving force behind the team’s success. The Lakers finished with 27 points, eight assists, and six rebounds, and LeBron James had his moments, setting the tone early on for the team so that they could finish.

One of the issues that Los Angeles is facing is that it did not receive much outside of Davis and James. It was D’Angelo Russell who was the subject of intense scrutiny following the game, despite the fact that Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura were rather quiet.

What you need to know about Russell’s performance and what it all signifies moving forward is presented in the following paragraphs.

D’Angelo Russell Game 1 stats vs. Nuggets

  • At the end of the first game, Russell finished with 13 points, shooting 6-for-20 from the field and 1-for-9 from beyond the arc. Between Davis (23) and James (16), he tried the second-most shots for the Lakers. He was the second-most, behind James (16).
  • Additionally, Russell contributed three rebounds, three assists, and two steals, while also committing one turnover of the ball. His one and only turnover, which was a poor pass in transition that was intercepted by Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and resulted in a three-pointer from Jamal Murray, occurred in the third quarter, when the Nuggets were able to take control of the game by outscoring the Lakers by a score of 32 goals to 18.
  • On the broadcast, ESPN’s Bob Myers made the observation that James did not appear to be very pleased with Russell at the time of the incident.

D’Angelo Russell stats vs. Nuggets in 2023 NBA Playoffs

In the previous postseason, Russell had a difficult time playing against the Nuggets, and this continues a dangerous pattern for him.

During the first round of the playoffs, Russell played 31.1 minutes per game against the Grizzlies. However, during the Conference Finals, he played only 23.5 minutes per game against the Nuggets. In addition, Hachimura was able to take his starting position in Game 4 of the series, which resulted in Russell just playing 15 minutes from the field.

Russell is currently 3-for-24 from three-point range in his previous five playoff games against the Nuggets, including the 2023 Western Conference Finals. This includes the Nuggets championship game.

The one-time All-Star, who had a career-high 41.5 percent shooting from three-point range during the regular season of 2023-24, which resulted in an average of 18.0 points per game, is going to be disappointed by this new development.

In order to have any chance of winning against the Nuggets, it is highly likely that the Lakers will require Russell to provide a scoring punch. There are also other possibilities, such as decreasing the number of minutes he plays and providing more opportunities to players like Spencer Dinwiddie, Gabe Vincent, and Taurean Prince.

Will the Lakers bench D’Angelo Russell?

Jovan Buha of The Athletic said that after Game 1, the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, Darvin Ham, stated that he will not start Russell on the bench because to a single poor shooting performance.

According to reports, Ham also mentioned that Russell’s performance during the regular season and the team’s victory over the Pelicans in the Play-In game, in which he scored 21 points while shooting five-for-11 from outside the arc, were significant factors in the Lakers’ ability to reach this point.

Due to the fact that Game 2 is scheduled to take place on Monday, April 22, the Lakers will not have much time to think out modifications.
