Did referees miss timeout call from 76ers' Nick Nurse? Explaining controversial ending to Knicks' Game 2 win

During their game against the 76ers on Monday night at Madison Square Garden, the Knicks played with the same level of intensity as Reggie Miller.

A memorable finale to Game 2 of the Eastern Conference first-round series. New York took a 2-0 lead into Philadelphia after Donte DiVincenzo and Jalen Brunson hit two 3-pointers in the waning seconds to win the game on their home court.

Eight points in 21 seconds may sound familiar to Knicks fans, since they've been on the other end of a similar last-minute barrage. The Pacers won the 1995 Eastern Conference semifinals when Miller scored eight points in 8.9 seconds.

The show-stopping finish in New York was the Knicks' latest win in a spectacular season. New York is playing up to its No. 2 seed after its best regular season performance since 2012-13.

On one side, Knicks fans are thrilled, but on the other, fans are angry and disappointed. 76ers head coach Nick Nurse says the problem is with the officials.

Nurse criticised the officiating after the 76ers' 104-101 Game 2 loss. In his postgame news conference, the 76ers coach alleged officials saw him request a timeout seconds before the DiVincenzo 3-pointer but did not blow the whistle.

The game ended when "The first thing is obviously they score, we take a look at getting it in quick, we don't get it in quick," Nurse remarked. Calling timeout. Referee eyed me, ignored me. I went to Tyrese and called timeout again. The melee began.

"I won't suggest I have to sprint on the floor or do something to catch his attention. It would have been excellent to take a timeout there. Unable to get."

In the footage, Nurse appears to call a timeout with his hands. However, the officials' reaction is not shown, and play proceeded until New York grabbed the lead.

“I just watched the film, just to make sure,” Nurse stated. A timeout is called. The tape showed me calling timeout twice, but I didn't check if he could see me."

According to ESPN's Tim Bontemps, the 76ers will complain to the league office about the officiating in the series' opening two games. The Knicks won Game 1 111-104 following a strong fourth quarter.

History doesn't support Philadelphia's request for a review. Several teams have made complaints this season, but none of them have been found to be valid.
